The COVID-19 pandemic introduced strict restrictions and all international travel to a complete standstill last year. As the worst of the coronavirus is behind us, most countries are opening their borders for visitors yet again. After 19 months of the travel ban, the USA borders reopening for land travel is a silver lining. The USA has eased restrictions and all travellers regardless of their reason for travel can enter the country.
Eligibility Criteria for Entering the USA
The USA borders reopening for eager cross-border travellers and visitors have some conditions and protocols. The Department of Homeland Security has stated that individuals must be fully vaccinated and have legal documentation to travel. The announcement was formally made on Wednesday, the 12th of October, 2021.
Cross-border Land Travel Was Long Overdue for America
America was adamant on cross-border travel by land even in August this year. It continued the travel ban on non-essential travels albeit Canada allowing Americans to enter and move around the country freely. This decision even invited harsh criticism from Canadian authorities and Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau who believed it caused confusion. USA borders reopening means international students can also easily travel to and from Canada by land.
Homeland Security is all set to amend its Title 19 regulations and will allow nonessential travellers into the USA. Individuals who wish to enter by land vehicles or ferry will be required to prove their vaccination status. Ferry ports and checkpoints will ensure travellers have the necessary legal documentation to enter the country.
With the USA borders reopening after a long time, many government officials and senates have commended the move. Many individuals in Canada and Mexico have been facing hardships due to land border closures in the USA. However, now they can freely travel provided they are approved by the US Customs and Border Protection.
