Studying abroad is a dream for most students, and with good reason. Studying overseas provides much more than education and knowledge. It allows students to explore new experiences, places, and cultures and gain a global perspective while earning a substantial degree. Spending even one year in a foreign university allows learners to get equipped with intercultural communication skills, foreign languages, and several soft/life skills like problem-solving, quick decision-making, budgeting, and networking.

Studies have found that the top-five popular countries for international students are the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada, China, and Australia. The USA is a widely preferred choice among these countries as it promises better lifestyle standards, developed country experience, exposure to different cultures, and significant employment opportunities. This is why the number of Indian students in the United States rose by over 12% in 2021.

However, studying abroad can be an expensive affair, and the United States is a high-priced country, with a significant difference between the Rupee and the Dollar. Cities like New York and San Francisco, home to some of the world’s most noteworthy universities and academic institutions, have a higher cost of living. Fortunately for Indian students, the fluctuating exchange rate of the rupee gives them the advantage to complete their study abroad dreams. Many affordable cities in the United States have excellent academic institutions that can help students achieve their higher education dreams without burning a hole in their or their parent’s pockets.

If you are one of those students planning to complete higher education on US soil on budget, here’s a list of five affordable cities you might want to check out. Let’s dive in!!

  • Memphis, Tennessee

Known as the home of the Blues & Birthplace of Rock’ n’ Roll, gospel, jazz, R&B, rap, and soul, Memphis is one of the highly sought-after cities among international students. Its exceptional musical heritage makes it a popular destination for aspiring musicians and art lovers.

Cost of living: Memphis’s cost of living is approximately 20% below the US average. Rent in the city is incredibly affordable, just between USD 750 and 800.

  • Philadelphia, Pennsylvania

After Los Angeles, New York, Chicago, and Boston, Philadelphia has the most number of colleges in the United States. It also has many historically significant places to explore. The best part is that Philadelphia is at a strategic location, just two hours away from New York City and three hours from Washington, DC–something students can find handy while doing internships or projects.

Cost of living: The average cost of living in Philadelphia is around $800 to $1300.

  • Tulsa, Oklahoma

A dynamic city with an outstanding food scene and an unrequited love for the arts, Tulsa has the country’s largest collections of art deco architecture. It is filled with lively culture, rich history, bustling urban districts, and Southern hospitality, a perfect place for students to learn and thrive.

Cost of living: Once considered the Oil Capital of the World, Tulsa has variously affordable renting options with an average monthly payment of about $700 for a one-bedroom apartment.

  • Louis, Missouri

The city was the first in the United States to host the modern Olympics (1904). It has marvelous history, especially the Gateway Arch, the tallest monument constructed in the country, commemorating the historical role of St. Louis as the ‘Gateway of the West. The city offers ample opportunities for students to make headways in their professional and personal lives.

Cost of Living: The average cost of a one-bedroom apartment in St. Louis is roughly between $850 to $1000.

  • San Antonio, Texas

One of the most famous tourist destinations in South-Central Texas, San Antonio has a remarkable colonial heritage. It is vibrant, colorful, and full of possibilities. The city also boasts of cost-effective living and a mild climate, making it the ideal place to set up roots for completing higher education.

Cost of living: For one-bedroom apartments, students need to pay a minimum of $ 1200 but can save money on groceries and other necessities.

A word of advise

Studying abroad doesn’t have to be an expensive affair. You can make conscious and calculated choices, create a budget and stick by it, and make the best of both worlds— excellent education and affordable cost of living. Instead of brooding over the universities with expensive fee structures and out-of-budget living costs, focus on getting a quality education. Once you have the arrow of knowledge and education in your quiver, the sky’s the limit. Start preparing for your studying abroad journey today and make the best of the resources available to you right now. Good Luck!!!
